Support for local community will continue under new chairman

Sir Peter Michael CBE, founder and chairman of Greenham Trust, retires after twenty-one years

Sir Peter MichaelFounder of Greenham Trust, Sir Peter Michael CBE, will be retiring from his role as its chairman after twenty-one years of service. He will be succeeded this month by current Trust director, Charles Brims.

Sir Peter founded Greenham Trust in 1997, leading a band of local businessmen to buy the former RAF Greenham Common from the Ministry of Defence for £7.5million. His vision to transform the former US airbase into a commercial business park, which would provide income to directly benefit the people of West Berkshire and North Hampshire, defined the Trust’s identity as the backbone of the local community.

Over three decades, Sir Peter has been at the vanguard of Greenham Trust’s snowballing strength. Under his chairmanship, the annual sum of donations has risen from £25,000 in the Trust’s inaugural year to £4million today. Over the past twenty years, he has overseen the birth of fundraising website, The Good Exchange, and £40million in funding to benefit nearly 3,000 local good causes.

“I will look back fondly at my time with Greenham Trust. I’m extremely proud of what has been achieved by the team and fellow Trustees and am glad we have enabled many charitable projects to flourish. I have no doubt that the local community will continue to benefit from the Trust’s continued success under Charles as the new chairman,” said Sir Peter.

Charles BrimsCurrent Greenham Trust director, Charles Brims, will be taking up his new position on 4th September 2018. As a deputy lieutenant for Berkshire, director of the Newbury Weekly News and former High Sheriff of Berkshire, Charles is a well-established ambassador for the local community. His involvement in, and passion for, the community will hold him in good stead as he takes over the Trust’s reins.

Charles Brims commented "It is a privilege to succeed Sir Peter as chairman and I look forward to building on the success he has brought to this excellent charity that does so much good for the local community"

Chief executive of Greenham Trust, Chris Boulton, said: “Charles will lead the team to grow the Trust’s assets thus increasing the available funding for the community of West Berkshire and North Hampshire. I have no doubt that his vision will become a reality as he follows in Sir Peter’s footsteps and steers Greenham Trust from strength to strength.”
