Hundreds of runners Step Up 4 Good

10k and family fun runs boosts funding for local projects

Runners, of all ages laced up their trainers and turned out in force for Greenham Trust’s Step Up 4 Good races on Sunday, raising money for many local community projects.

Nearly 800 runners signed-up for this year’s Step Up 4 Good and braved the weather to take part in the mini-mile and 5k fun runs, with 350 entries in the 10K race.

The mini-mile run was the first to get under way and was broken down into different age categories. The winners of the various categories were:
Girls Under 5 – Matilda Lorman (15:05)
Boys Under 5 – Luca Rabbiosi (13:38)
Girls 5-8 – Abigail Spencer (08:51)
Boys 5-8 – Ben Daley (08:43)
Girls 9-11 – Daisy Cooper (08:38)
Boys 9-11 – Joshua Norton (07:49)

The 5K was divided into under 15’s and adults. The winners were:
Girls Under 15 – Kirsten Fraser (20:28)
Boys Under 15 – Jacob Woods (20:25)
Adult Female – Helen Strutt (23:00)
Adult Male – Bernie Gerrard (19:18)

Among the mini-mile and 5K runners were a number of pupils from St Nicolas C of E Junior School, Willows Primary School, Speenhamland Primary School, Curridge Primary School, St John the Evangelist Infant and Nursery, John Rankin School and Horris Hill School all raising funds for their own school projects via The Good Exchange.

Also taking part were several teams raising money for local good causes such as The Rosemary Appeal, Five A Day, Dingley’s Promise, Boxford Masques, Eight Bells for Mental Health and many more.

There was a fantastic turnout for the 10K, with fierce competition for some amazing prizes. The first male over the finish line was James Gaunt in 36:31, followed 30 seconds later by James Knight who claimed the male 10K veterans prize in 37:02. Ben Broyd took second place in 37:09 and Nick Strong finished 3rd in 39:02. Sarah Potter, from Sheffield University CC, completed the course in an impressive 38:15 to take 1st female, Chantal Percival came second 39:53 two minutes ahead of Nicci Clay 41:33 who took third place. The female 10K veteran’s prize went to Sally Robson, who finished in 47:47.

After building on the success of the previous two annual events, chief executive of Greenham Trust, Chris Boulton, said, “We are delighted with the success of this year’s event and are looking forward to Step Up 4 Good 2019 already. Congratulations to all the runners that took part, the volunteers who gave up their time and to the supporters who helped create a great atmosphere.

“Step Up 4 Good is a valuable addition to Greenham Trust’s community events, encouraging people to become more active and bringing individuals from all walks of life together to raise money for charitable causes”.
